<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>In the professional community of Donbass miners, there are ideas about Shubin, a mythological character who lives in mine workings and has the functions of patronage or sabotage towards miners. The image is reflected in verbal formulas and phraseological units, narratives about genesis, urban legends about mythological character’s warnings or miraculous rescue from a rock collapse. Thanks to mediatization, memorial and museum cultures, authorities’ educational and patriotic work and several types of discourse, Shubin’s image became known outside the subculture, mostly concentrated around the mining regions. The mythological character is also used in “folklore branding”: in political narratives, user nicknames and the name of a musical group, as well as the naming of the local enterprises’ products. The article is devoted to the analysis of the myth of Shubin in the mining community of Donbass: forms, genres, characteristics of the mythological character according to the description scheme of L.N. Vinogradova and S.M. Tolstaya. The article analyzes how Shubin’s image is transformed during the transition from subculture to culture and analyzes the myth’s existence in the media space.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Шубин</kwd><kwd>шахтерский фольклор</kwd><kwd>мифологический персонаж</kwd><kwd>фольклорный бренд</kwd><kwd>горный дух</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Shubin</kwd><kwd>mining folklore</kwd><kwd>mythological character</kwd><kwd>folklore brand</kwd><kwd>mountain spirit</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><funding-statement xml:lang="ru">В работе использованы результаты проекта «Язык, литература, культура в историческом и социальном измерении», выполненного в рамках Программы фундаментальных исследований НИУ ВШЭ в 2025 г.</funding-statement><funding-statement xml:lang="en">The results of the project «Language, literature and culture in historical and social perspective», carried out within the framework of the Basic Research Program at HSE University in 2025, are presented in this work.</funding-statement></funding-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Архипова*, Кирзюк 2020 – Архипова* А. А.
