<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article describes the oikotypes of “wild people” among the Caucasian peoples. Particular attention is paid to the highly frequent type of the axe-chested “wild man,” which in the Caucasus has a remarkably stable set of characteristics and narratives (regardless of the ethnicity). This type can be considered endemic, as it is completely uncharacteristic of other regions where texts about “wild people” are found. It specifically refers to a wild man with an axe on his chest. This type is defined by a stable complex of motifs: “The Demon Approaches the Hunter’s Campfire” (Berezkin L10A) and “The Sharp Breast” (Berezkin L10A). In a number of cases, these are supplemented by other motifs emphasizing the demonic nature of the “wild man” (such as cohabitation with a human woman, vulnerability only to a second bullet, the use of apotropaic words against him, etc.). The dominance of demonic traits in the descriptions of “wild people” among the Caucasian peoples, including certain appearance features (such as being one-eyed), the ability to resurrect animals, and the functions of a forest deity, suggest that the core characteristics of this mythological character can be traced back to the archetype of the divine patron of the forest, wild animals, and hunting.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>«дикий человек»</kwd><kwd>мифологический персонаж</kwd><kwd>Кавказ</kwd><kwd>топор на груди</kwd><kwd>хозяин леса и диких животных</kwd><kwd>божество охоты</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>“wild man”</kwd><kwd>mythological character</kwd><kwd>Caucasus</kwd><kwd>axe on the chest</kwd><kwd>divine patron of the forest</kwd><kwd>wild animals</kwd><kwd>hunting</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><funding-statement xml:lang="ru">Статья выполнена в рамках гранта «Легенда о “диком (снежном) человеке”: происхождение, региональные версии, контексты массовой культуры» Российского научного фонда, грант № 24-18-01119, https://rscf.ru/project/24-18-01119/</funding-statement><funding-statement xml:lang="en">This work was supported by The Russian Science Foundation, project “The legend of the ‘wild (snow) man’: origin, regional versions, contexts of popular culture”, no. 24-18-01119.</funding-statement></funding-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Вирсаладзе 1973 – Вирсаладзе Е.Б.
